Children's charity benefits from Carbon Stoppers scheme

A CHARITY known to thousands of children through its popular giraffe mascot called Harrold is the latest good cause to benefit from the innovative Carbon Stoppers scheme.

Worthy cause: Lorraine Hewitt, and mascot Harold, receives the £200 Carbon Stoppers donation from Jenni Wilkinson, TYB’s Head of Marketing, and Julia Magee of the Daily Echo with pupils from Hill View Primary School, Bournemouth.

The newly renamed Life Education Wessex has received a £200 cheque from the joint Transdev Yellow Buses/Daily Echo initiative.

Lorraine Hewitt, Corporate Development Fundraiser, accepted the donation at Hill View Primary School in Bournemouth.

“This will make a real difference to the children of Dorset and help us ensure they remain happy and healthy,” she said.

Life Education Wessex, which now operates across Devon and Somerset as well as Dorset, works with the community and schools to help children aged three to 11 make informed healthy choices in life.

Hill View is among more than 200 schools, and 42,000 children, visited by the charity’s high tech mobile classrooms, fun-filled programmes and specially trained educators.

Carbon Stoppers was jointly launched by Transdev Yellow Buses (TYB) and the Echo last autumn.

Each week the Bournemouth-based operator holds a ‘Thank You Thursday’ when every trip taken on the day contributes to a separately administered Community Chest.

TYB has pledged a minimum donation of £50 per week to the fund which is available to schools, community groups and good causes in its coverage area.

Carbon Stoppers is believed to be the first initiative of its kind in the UK bus industry. It is heavily promoted on TYB’s buses, used by more than 12m passengers per annum, and its website.

TYB has guaranteed its involvement in the project until at least the end of this year.

To date, a total of £1,150 has been raised for good causes including Bournemouth Talking Newspaper, Devon & Somerset Air Ambulance and Cherry Tree Nursery, run by the Sheltered Work Opportunities Project.

Jenni Wilkinson, TYB’s Head of Marketing, said: “I know from personal experience of the wonderful work done by Life Education Wessex.

“We’re very pleased that such a worthy cause has benefited from our Carbon Stoppers campaign.”
