Transdev Yellow Buses (TYB) threw down the gauntlet as part of its preparations for Valentine’s Day.

Since 2007 the company has celebrated the romantic day by presenting red roses and cards to passengers.

In previous years the card has included a suitably corny poem penned by Jenni Wilkinson, TYB’s Head of Marketing.

But this year the company decided to challenge other budding poets to take part.

The winning entry, from Annie Chambers of Cromwell Road, Wimborne, will now be printed in Valentine cards for handing out on Saturday February 14.

She was presented with a bouquet of flowers and a box of chocolates as well as a 30 day Yellowcard, worth £52, which is being donated to charity.

“I write poems all the time for family occasions and won a competition for Wimborne in Bloom last year but this was quite a surprise,” said Mrs Chambers.

TYB’s Jenni Wilkinson said: “Judging by the number and range of entries we received it’s fair to say that the age of romance is very much alive. The contest has been a lot of fun with Mrs Chambers a worthy winner.”

The winning entry reads:

We're so glad you decided to be with us today
It gives us another opportunity to say
We try to be smart and always on time
'cos nothing's too much if you're our Valentine.

So come for a ride or a trip on our bus
We'll treat you like royalty yet without too much fuss.
Give us a chance to show what we're like

And we guarantee it will be better than riding your bike!

Whatever you choose - have a great day
Let's hope it's by bus is all we can say.

Leave your worries at home and have a wee rest
Leave the driving to us - it's what we do best.
