Orphanage project boosted by Carbon Stoppers donation
STUDENTS who are raising money to fund a volunteering trip to a Bulgarian orphanage have received a £200 boost from Carbon Stoppers.
Nine volunteers from the Students Union at Bournemouth University (SUBU) are taking part in the project called thehub Goes Global.
They plan to spend ten days at the orphanage in the town of Rousse from June 7 to 16. It houses 15-20 children aged from three to seven years.
The student volunteers have a £10,000 fundraising target for the trip with about £2,000 raised to date.
A variety of activities are being organised to raise the extra cash ranging from a ‘bid for a student’ day to street collections and a pancake race.
Andie Hill, SU Volunteer Coordinator, said: “It’s fantastic news that we’ve received a donation from Carbon Stoppers. We’re really pleased.”
Carbon Stoppers was jointly launched by Yellow Buses – named Shire Operator of the Year at the 2009 UK Bus Awards - and the Daily Echo in 2008. Carbon Stoppers was also ‘highly commended’ at the 2009 UK Bus Awards.
Each week the bus company holds a ‘Thank You Thursday’ when every trip taken on the day contributes to a separately administered Community Chest.
Yellow Buses has pledged a minimum donation of £50 per week to the fund which is available to schools, community groups and good causes in its coverage area. Echo readers are invited to nominate worthy recipients.
Carbon Stoppers is believed to be the first initiative of its kind in the UK bus industry. It is heavily promoted on Yellow Buses’ 110-strong fleet, used by more than 13m passengers per annum, and its website.
To date, a total of £3,600 has been raised.
Other good causes to benefit include Bournemouth Talking Newspaper, Dorset & Somerset Air Ambulance, Cherry Tree Nursery, Life Education Wessex, Hospital Radio Bedside, Waggy Tails Rescue, Bournemouth People First, Nile 20, Rebound Gym Club, Caring Canines, Pink Champagne Dragon Boat Team, S.P.R.I.N.G, Bournemouth Food Bank and Help & Care.
