Burton villagers celebrate launch of new bus service

VILLAGERS in Burton are celebrating the launch of a new interim bus service on a route previously earmarked for the axe.

More than 30 gathered on the village green to welcome Transdev Yellow Buses’ service 21 linking Burton and Bournemouth.

It was launched on Sunday, May 24, after Dorset County Council and Christchurch Borough Council teamed up to secure a service for the village.

Encouraging response: Marc West, Transdev Yellow Buses’ Planning & Schedules Manager, holds an impromptu question and answer session on Burton’s village green.

The local authorities acted following Wilts & Dorset’s decision to withdraw Burton journeys on its service X12.

The 21 runs an hourly service from Mondays to Saturdays with an enhanced service during peak morning and afternoon periods. There is a two-hourly service on Sundays and public holidays.

Villager Jan Steer, who was one of the people campaigning for a replacement for the X12, said: “We’re delighted to be getting this new service but it’s vital people vote with their feet and use it.

“The more people use the bus the greater the chance it will be saved for the long term.”

Marc West, Transdev Yellow Buses’ Planning & Schedules Manager, held an impromptu question and answer session on the green as more than 30 villagers crowded round for information.

He said: “The level of interest shown is very encouraging and we hope it is reflected in the number of people using the new service.”

The interim service will run for a three-month period while Dorset County Council and Christchurch Borough Council seek a more permanent solution.
