First of new £1.5 million bus fleet takes to the road

A BRAND new fleet of luxury buses has taken to the road to cope with passenger demand on one of the main corridor routes operated by Transdev Yellow Buses (TYB).

The first of 11 Optare Tempo low-floor single-deckers began operating on TYB’s 1a service linking Bournemouth and Somerford from Sunday, May 3.

The buses, which boast leather seats and wood-effect floors, can carry up to 66 passengers and cost £1.5 million. To date, TYB has taken delivery of six vehicles with the remaining five expected to be in service by the end of May.

The Tempos’ arrival follows the success of the Optare Versa fleet which began running on the 1a service last October.

The Versas, which also have leather seats and can take up to 56 passengers, proved an instant hit with passengers. TYB decided to order the larger Tempo in order to cope with the extra demand.

Jenni Wilkinson, TYB’s Head of Marketing, said: “It is no exaggeration to say that passengers love the Versa. We soon discovered that we needed a larger version to satisfy demand.”

The Tempos’ arrival coincided with TYB’s May timetable change which saw the frequency of services on its 1a service boosted.

Extra buses have been put on at morning, afternoon and early peak periods.

Buses now run every seven and a half minutes – instead of the previous ten minutes – during the week and every 15 minutes during Sunday lunchtime.

When combined with TYB’s 1b and 1c services it means a total of 14 buses are running every hour on the main Bournemouth, Boscombe, Pokesdown, Christchurch corridor route from Monday to Saturday lunchtime.

The Tempos now allocated to service 1a have been supplemented by two Versas. The remaining nine Versas, which began service last October as part of a £1.3 million investment, are being switched to TYB’s service 3 linking Bournemouth and the Royal Bournemouth Hospital.
