Food Bank thanks Carbon Stoppers for “generous donation”

BOURNEMOUTH Food Bank has become the latest good cause to benefit from Carbon Stoppers.

The community initiative has received £200 from the joint Transdev Yellow Buses/Echo scheme.

Catherine Clark, Head of Operations, and Vicki Lent, Manager, were presented with a cheque by Jenni Wilkinson, TYB’s Head of Marketing, and Sally Spicer, Marketing Assistant.

“We’re very grateful to Transdev Yellow Buses and the Echo for this generous donation and their very kind support,” said Catherine.

Launched in 2007, more than 4,000 people have been helped by Bournemouth Food Bank this year.

Organisers describe the current demand as “heavier than ever.” The food bank operates all-year round although the Christmas period is the busiest time.

Food donations are received from a range of sources, including churches, community groups, businesses and supermarkets.

Vouchers are distributed through health visitors, head teachers, doctor surgeries, church ministers and other community workers. They can then be exchanged for emergency food parcels from distribution points around Bournemouth.

Carbon Stoppers was jointly launched by TYB – named Shire Operator of the Year at the 2009 UK Bus Awards – and the Echo in autumn 2008. Carbon Stoppers was also ‘highly commended’ at the 2009 UK Bus Awards.

Each week the bus company holds a ‘Thank You Thursday’ when every trip taken on the day contributes to a separately administered Community Chest.
TYB has pledged a minimum donation of £50 per week to the fund which is available to schools, community groups and good causes in its coverage area. Echo readers are invited to nominate worthy recipients.

Carbon Stoppers is believed to be the first initiative of its kind in the UK bus industry. It is heavily promoted on TYB’s buses, used by more than 13m passengers per annum, and its website.

To date, a total of £3,150 has been raised.

Other good causes to benefit include Bournemouth Talking Newspaper, Dorset & Somerset Air Ambulance, Cherry Tree Nursery, Life Education Wessex, Hospital Radio Bedside, Waggy Tails Rescue, Bournemouth People First, Nile 20, Rebound Gym Club, Caring Canines, Pink Champagne Dragon Boat Team and S.P.R.I.N.G.
